Four Spiritual Paths

Buddhism, Christianity, Hoa Hao Buddhism, and Caodaism

A Comparison of Their Similarities, Differences, and Their Relationship with Artificial Intelligence

Translated into English and editorially elucidated with the assistance of ChatGPT  from the original Vietnamese manuscript

Preface

Vietnam is home to a rich diversity of religious traditions. Buddhism has been present in the country for nearly two thousand years, while Christianity arrived later from the West. Alongside these imported faiths are two indigenous religions deeply rooted in southern Vietnam: Hoa Hao Buddhism and Caodaism.

This article compares these four religions from several major perspectives, including their historical development, founders, core beliefs, ethical teachings, religious practices, social activities, views on death, and the ways they address humanity's fundamental questions. Its purpose is simply to clarify both the similarities and the differences among them. It does not seek to determine which religion is right or wrong, nor does it attempt to persuade readers to follow any particular faith.

Neither does this article attempt to describe each religion in exhaustive detail. Instead, it presents only the essential features necessary for meaningful comparison. Throughout the text, readers will also find references for further exploration should they wish to study any tradition in greater depth.

Whether you already belong to a religion or have not chosen any spiritual path, we hope this article will provide a clearer understanding of the religious traditions that continue to shape Vietnamese society today.

By 2026, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly influential force, affecting not only the way people work but also the way many think, believe, and make decisions. Some observers have even suggested that AI is beginning to resemble a kind of "new religion." For this reason, the final chapter explores the relationship between AI and these four religious traditions.

The author would also like to acknowledge AI tools - including ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Grok - for assisting in locating information and comparing key concepts that contributed to the preparation of this work.
